Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman Sparks Democratic Backlash After Linking Abdul El-Sayed to ‘Pro-Hamas Wing’: ‘Out in the Open Racism’

Fetterman really said that out loud?

Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman escalated his ongoing criticism of the Democratic Party’s progressive wing during a CNBC interview, calling Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed the prospective leader of what he described as an emerging “pro-Hamas wing” of the party. The remarks quickly spread online, drawing both praise and backlash from viewers.

During the interview, CNBC asked Fetterman about El-Sayed’s earlier “ogre on a pike” remark and criticism of his Democratic record.

Fetterman brushed off the personal jab, joking, “Call me Senator Shrek, whatever.“

He then turned his attention back to El-Sayed, calling him the prospective leader of what he described as a “pro-Hamas wing” within the Democratic Party. Fetterman said some of El-Sayed’s past statements and actions were “unacceptable” and questioned what he had done to draw the criticism.

The Pennsylvania senator argued the disagreement reflected a broader issue within the Democratic Party, criticizing progressive leaders over candidates they have supported in recent election cycles. He pointed to what he described as the “Platner disaster,” criticizing Sen. Bernie Sanders and others for backing Platner before serious allegations later emerged against the candidate.

Fetterman argued Democrats should be willing to publicly challenge people within their own party when they believe they are wrong rather than remaining silent.

Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman’s Comments Divide Viewers

The interview quickly circulated across social media, where users debated both Fetterman’s criticism of El-Sayed and his broader comments about the Democratic Party.

Some users criticized the senator’s remarks. One wrote, “Out in the open racism.” Another commented, “Just say you’re not a Democrat. No one will be surprised.”

Others questioned Fetterman’s role within the party. One user wrote, “At this point he’s not a Democrat criticizing the left anymore but basically a Republican operative with a D next to his name.” Another added, “No Democrats are pro-Hamas. Fetterman will say anything to get TV hits.“

Not everyone disagreed with him, however. One supporter wrote, “Fetterman is right. Glad someone in the country has the guts to call it out.” Another argued, “El Sayed has enemies in the Senate before starting. Not a wise move in a chamber where any one person can derail the agenda.”

The exchange added another chapter to Fetterman’s increasingly public disagreements with parts of his own party, a position that continues to spark debate among Democrats as the 2026 election cycle unfolds.
