Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is preparing to set sail, and things are not looking too hot for the famed Captain Jack Sparrow. A teaser trailer for the fifth installment of the franchise was shown during the two-hour season finale of AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead last night, and, unsurprisingly, Jack Sparrow is a wanted man.
The teaser features newcomers to the series- a ghost pirate, Captain Salazar (played by Javier Bardem), and Henry (Brenton Thwaites)- the former of whom has recently escaped from The Devil’s Triangle and is not-too-kindly searching for Jack Sparrow. In the midst of chaos and a destroyed ship, Salazar tells Henry in a chilling tone, “Find Sparrow for me and relay a message from Captain Salazar. Tell him death comes straight for him.”
It wouldn’t be Pirates of the Caribbean, of course, if Jack Sparrow didn’t have debts to settle and angry pirates to evade, but this time, it looks like his trickery and deception has run its course. The official synopsis explains that Jack is in search of the Trident of Poseidon, an item that gives the user complete control of the seas, and will allow him to defeat Salazar. Based on this, perhaps we can forgive Sparrow’s absence from the trailer. That being said, the teaser was just cryptic enough to keep us waiting until its 2017 release. Dead Men Tell No Tales looks noticeably darker in tone and in the story than the previous installments, and just in the small bit we have seen of Captain Salazar (the teaser is only two and a half minutes), he actually has the potential to make Davy Jones look…friendly.
The last movie in the franchise, On Stranger Tides, was released in 2011, and though it was the weakest installment at the box office in North America, it was still well received by critics and fans, and only added to the franchise’s billion dollar earnings. Dead Men Tell No Tales is directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg. The movie will be released May 26, 2017.
