This morning at the Gamescom convention in Cologne, Germany Microsoft announced they will bring crossplay for consoles for the game Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds. The game’s developer announced this feature at the Inside Xbox Gamescom presentation this morning. The developer, Brendon Greene, spoke about who will be able to play the game against each other this fall.
The feature is set for Xbox owners to play against PS4 owners of the game. This will allow for controller players to have an even playing field or ground against one another. Greene didn’t speak about any inclusion of PC players against console during his speech. This could be because they have no plans as of yet to bring the crossplay feature to PCs. Another system absent from the presentation was the mobile version of Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds. The mobile version of the game came out last year at this point so it would be safe to assume they have a good following and player base for that version as well. As of right now, the team working on crossplay had no comment on bringing it to mobile either. It is unknown at this point if the crossplay feature will allow for competitive play or just casual fun. With other games like Fortnite incorporating the entire features of the game to all its available platforms, we’ll have to wait and see what the team at Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds does for theirs.
The announcement of the crossplay feature came during the reveal of Season 4 of Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds. The Season 4 reveal highlighted the new items coming to the console version of the game this fall. Some items included in the reveal was the Season 4 Survivor Pass and the now 100 plus different rewards that come with the pass. The update to the fan-favorite map Erangal is also coming to console with the new season.
Greene said the goal for the team is to have crossplay be available for testing in late September of this year. The cross-play feature will be playable on the PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds test servers. The feature will then be available to everyone by going live late October on the normal game’s servers.
