Sony released the first software update for PS4 in 2023, marking the first update for the console in a while. Even though Sony has largely stopped supporting the PS4 since the launch of the PS5 in 2020, the console still has a dedicated fan base. Firmware version 10.50 for PS4 is now live and available to download, and while it may not be as significant as the PS5 update released alongside it, it does bring some changes and new features to PlayStation 4.

PS4 Gets New Features With Today’s Software Update

One of the main changes introduced by the new PS4 patch is improved access to authorized apps. Users can now view and manage their authorized apps, which are third-party apps and services that they have linked to their PlayStation Network account to. This feature allows users to share their account data with authorized apps more easily. Users can access their authorized apps by going to Settings > Account Management > Authorized Apps and scanning the QR code with their mobile device.

In addition to the improved authorized app access, the update also allows PS4 players to see which players in their game session are on other platforms. This feature is only available for games that support cross-platform play, but it is a welcome addition for those who play multiplayer games on different platforms.

The PS4 update also adds support for Unicode 15.0 emoji, which means users can now use the latest emojis in their messages and social media posts. Finally, the update also shows friends that are active on the PlayStation App as online on the user’s friends list. This feature improves communication and makes it easier to see who is available to play with.

One notable absence from the PS4 update is Discord voice chat, which was added to the PS5 update released on the same day. This disappointed many PS4 owners looking forward to using Discord on their consoles. However, it is possible that Sony will add this feature to the PS4 in a future update.

Overall, the new PS4 update may not be as significant as the PS5 update released on the same day, but it does bring some useful changes and improvements to the console. Sony’s continued support of the PS4 is appreciated by its loyal fan base, and it will be interesting to see what future updates will bring to the console.
