Pokémon Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl: What is Gastrodon's Weakness?
This article is over 3 years old and may contain outdated information.

Gastrodon is first introduced in Generation IV or the original Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, Gastrodon evolves from Shellos starting at level 30. And in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, you can also find Gastrodon roaming about in Fuego Ironworks, Route 218, Route 224, Route 230, or Pokemon Hideaways, specifically in the Fountainspring Cave. The East Sea variant is colored blue while the West Sea is pink. Although it doesn’t look particularly strong, Gastrodon is one of the few Pokemon which has a rare Water/Ground dual-typing, making its weaknesses somewhat elusive. In case you forgot or are a newcomer to the series, read below for more details on Gastrodon’s weaknesses in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.

Gastrodon Stats

Gastrodon is a Water/Ground-type Pokemon. With that in mind, its only weakness is Grass-type attacks since Water and Ground dual-typing Pokemon are only (extremely) susceptible to Grass attacks. Meanwhile, Gastrodon is completely invulnerable to Electric-type attacks, thanks to its second Ground-typing. Yes, this means all Ground-type Pokemon are also immune against Electric-type attacks. It also takes reduced damage from Fire, Poison, Rock, and Steel moves.

It’s somewhat important to remember that Gastrodon has lower Defense stats compared to its Special Defense. This suggests that you should use Physical Grass attacks such as Bullet Seed, Leaf Blade, or Seed Bomb to maximize your damage output. For convenience, below is the table that lists Gastrodon’s type weaknesses and strengths in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.

4x Damage0.5x Damage0 Damage

 PoisonWater
 Rock
 Steel

Together with Gastrodon, here is a (rather short) list of all Pokemon with Water/Ground dual-typing:

  1. Wooper
  2. Quagsire
  3. Mudkip
  4. Marshtomp
  5. Swampert
  6. Barboach
  7. Whiscash
  8. Gastrodon
  9. Palpitoad
  10. Seismitoad

A captured Gastrodon can have these abilities:

  • Ability:
    • Sticky Hold: Protects from item theft.
    • Or Storm Drain: Immune to all Water-type moves and forces all single-target Water attacks to strike this Pokemon.
  • Hidden Ability:
    • Sand Force: During a sandstorm, negates the sandstorm damages and increases the power of Rock, Ground, and Steel attack by 30%.

If you’re looking to get one for your party, here’s the moves Gastrodon will get in each level:

  • Base Move: Water Gun – Water, Special Attack
  • Base Move: Mud Slap – Ground, Special Attack
  • Base Move: Harden – Normal, Status Effect
  • Base Move: Recover – Normal, Status Effect
  • Level 15: Water Pulse – Water, Special Attack
  • Level 20: Ancient Power – Rock, Special Attack
  • Level 25: Body Slam – Normal, Physical Attack
  • Level 33: Muddy Water – Water, Special Attack
  • Level 39: Earth Power – Ground, Special Attack
  • Level 46: Rain Dance – Water, Status Effect
  • Level 53: Memento – Dark, Status Effect
