One look at this intimidating Ultra Beast can rattle any Pokemon Go trainer. Guzzlord is a powerful Dark/Dragon-type that pops up now and then in Raids. It’s not the easiest competitor to defeat with a Max CP of over 2,000 if it’s weather-boosted. So, to prep before the Ultra Beast Guzzlord shows up again in Pokemon Go, you’ll need to learn its counters and the best movesets to beat it.
Guzzlord Abilities and Movesets
[Updated July 11, 2024 – additional information about the best movesets against Guzzlord]
Guzzlord is no joke of an opponent. Just check out its robust moveset:
Fast Move | Charged Move |
---|---|
Dragon Tail (Dragon) | Brutal Swing (Dark) |
Snarl (Dark) | Crunch (Dark) |
Dragon Claw (Dragon) | |
Sludge Bomb (Poison) |
Both Dragon Tail (15 DMG) and Snarl (12 DMG) are solid fast moves, and both can cause STAB damage. The charged move Brutal Swing is the most dangerous though as it offers the highest DPS at 41.1, and as a bonus, it also causes STAB.
Ghost and Psychic-types are at the highest risk against Guzzlord in Pokemon Go as they’ll have a difficult time trying to counter it thanks to its strong moveset. However, if you have a pocket monster with certain moves that Guzzlord’s weak to despite being weak themselves, picking them may be worth the risk.
How To Beat Guzzlord in Pokemon Go
If you want to beat Guzzlord in Pokemon Go, you’ll need the right Pokemon to take advantage of its weaknesses to set up strong counters. Below are the Pokemon types that Guzzlord has moderate weakness toward:
- Bug
- Dragon
- Fighting
- Ice
Any pocket monster with those types of moves can hold their own against the massive Guzzlord. However, we want to end the battle as fast as possible because the Ultra Beast can hit back hard. To do this, we want to bring out the Fairy-type Pokemon and moves. Guzzlord has 2x the weakness from Fairy-type abilities, which is perfect for ending battles quickly.
Some of the best Pokemon to counter Guzzlord include the following:
- Gardevoir
- Togekiss
- Granbull
- Rapidash (Galarian)
- Alakazam
Best Movesets to Use
As we mentioned, Fairy-type moves are the best way to cause heavy damage. So, when building a moveset to beat Guzzlord in Pokemon Go, save your energy just for those types of abilities.
Gardevoir, Togekiss, and Granbull can utilize Charm as a fast move to wear Guzzlord down. Dazzling Gleam is a great charged move for the first two, but consider Play Rough with Granbull as its other charged moves (Close Combat and Crunch) won’t do much damage.
Alakazam uses Dazzling Gleam too, but it can come in with Counter for its fast move instead of Charm. Guzzlord may not be as weak to Fighting as it is to Fairy-type moves, but it will still whittle away at its HP. Just take care with Alakazam because as a Psychic-type, it’s naturally weak against most of Guzzlord’s moves.
Meanwhile, Rapidash (Galarian) can counter Guzzlord in Pokemon Go with a moveset consisting of Fairy Wind (fast) and Play Rough (charged). It does have a Fighting-type fast move (Low Kick), but it’s weaker than Fairy Wind.
Now that you know how to counter Guzzlord, you can focus on finding Pokemon with some of the movesets mentioned above. This will give you a stronger chance at winning (and even soloing) Guzzlord the next time it rolls around.
