Prince Harry‘s Netflix polo series takes a hit again, this time, from a famed polo figure and friend Tommy Severn. Harry and Meghan Markle’s new documentary Polo hit Netflix on December 8, giving a more personal insight into the polo world, mostly through the eyes of the father-son pair Timmy and Tim Dutta. However, despite all the buzz surrounding the film’s release, it has widely been written off as a dud. Aside from fans criticizing the prince for promoting a sport that “glorified animal abuse” critics deem it a boring and overhyped series that thrives merely on public fascination.
Tommy Severn, an old friend of Prince Harry’s, who is also the captain of Polo England joined the league of critics with something to say about the Susexes’ new Netflix documentary. Speaking to Daily Mail, Tommy described the show as “very weird,” citing the notably limited appearance of Harry and Meghan despite being the show’s main crowd-puller. He divulged,
“It seemed to be more about Timmy and Tim Dutta than the Prince, who doesn’t appear until near the end.”
Prince Harry Warned Not to Return to England After Polo Series
Tommy Severn also called out Prince Harry’s failure to mention him in his Netflix show despite his playing a major role in the estranged prince’s polo history. Notably, Tommy’s family forged a close connection to Harry and his brother Prince Williams during their formative years in the game. The princes even kept their ponies at the Gloucestershire polo stud belonging to Tommy’s grandfather Christopher Hanbury.
Additionally, Prince Harry spent his gap year at the Severn family ranch in Argentina ahead of his college journey, further proving just how close he was to the family. Hence, having the prince erase that part of his polo history in a five-hour-long documentary about polo was something Tommy Severn could not wrap his finger around. Asked about the reason behind Harry’s decision, Tommy admitted he had no idea. He went on to share his thoughts about the Prince’s speculated UK comeback, warning Harry to rethink his choices lest he embarrassed himself. He divulged,
“I have no idea why Harry hadn’t mentioned his connection to me during the show. I think Harry’s cut ties so if he came back now, he’d look like an idiot.”
Despite his reservations about Prince Harry’s UK return, Tommy Severn remained hopeful a comeback could happen someday. However, that, according to him, would require the intervention of his royal brother and heir to the British throne, Prince William. The polo captain explained that William may need to help his brother out to make his UK comeback seamless, given how close they once were. As for whether or not William would extend that olive branch, he could only hope that “the brother’s bond” would come through for the feuding brothers this time on, ending the royal rift for good.
