If there is a prize for most ironically named video game series, Final Fantasy takes the crown. Created by Square employee Hironobu Sakaguchi as a last hurrah before the company now known as Square Enix would have to bow out of the gaming industry. Hence the name, ‘Final’ Fantasy. 28 years later, we are awaiting the 15th ‘main’ installment in the series. This isn’t counting the flood of sequels and spin-off games. Which brings us neatly onto the subject of Final Fantasy 6.
One of the most beloved games in the series, Final Fantasy 6 is still sometimes in the shadow of its younger sibling Final Fantasy 7. This is partly due to the fact that it was the, hah, Final game in the series before Nintendo fumbled things and Square jumped ship to Sony. The last of the ‘SNES’ games, it is considered to have one of the most powerful storylines in the series. You follow the adventures of an Imperial soldier, Terra, as she breaks free of mind control and challenges the emperor’s plan to revive the forbidden arts of magic. The game has seen two ports; one for the original PlayStation and one for the Gameboy Advance. The GBA port was an updated re-release that rebalanced the combat, improved the graphics and got a better translation. Final Fantasy 6 has also seen release for mobile devices.
And now it’s looking like there may be a re-release for PC. PEGI has released a rating for Final Fantasy 6 on the PC. While this might just be a straight port, there is a reason for pause. As any RPG player not living under a rock knows that Square Enix bowed to the inevitable and agreed to do a Final Fantasy 7 remake from the ground up. Is it possible that the cult classic of the series will get similar treatment?
We’ll keep you posted.
