Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle have become generally disliked by Americans despite their initial warm reception, but where did it all go wrong? The Duke and Duchess of Sussex faced the height of their dwindling popularity this month when they made the list of Hollywood’s biggest losers of 2024. Although this classification could easily be attributed to the couple’s recent project flops under their Netflix deal, it goes way beyond that.
Royal biographer Ingrid Seward touched on the couple’s popularity plunge, suggesting it had more to do with their decision to turn their backs on the monarchy. Speaking to The Standard, the royal expert explained that after quizzing a number of people on the subject, she came to realize that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were generally “disliked by Americans” for letting down the late Queen Elizabeth II. He divulged,
“I gave a lot of talks to Americans and they all dislike Harry and Meghan. They hate that they let the Queen down.”
Eric Trump’s Bashful Comment Damns Harry and Meghan
Additionally, Ingrid believes that over time, Americans have increasingly lost interest in Prince Harry and Meghan Markle after the initial buzz. Hence, it is only natural that this dwindling interest in the US-based royalties would lead to a drop in their popularity. Ingrid Seward suggested that US President-elect Donald Trump’s son Eric Trump’s recent comments tearing down the Sussexes have greatly contributed to their popularity taking a hit.
In the heat of the US presidential elections, the 40-year-old slammed the Duke of Sussex, stating that he did not “give a damn about” him, and neither did the country. He went on to affirm his fondness for the “incredibly beautiful” monarchy, particularly the late Queen whom his father loved. Notably, Eric’s view of Prince Harry and the monarchy could reflect the royal perception of Americans as a whole, which explains why the once-accepted prince and his wife Meghan Markle have become so disliked in the country.
Following their royal step back in 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle received a warm American welcome, attracting public sympathy when they first disclosed dirt on the monarchy in their explosive Oprah interview. However, as they continued spilling more royal secrets that seemingly portrayed them as victims, the public sentiments quickly shifted, eventually turning on the Sussexes for good. If Ingrid’s take was anything to go by, then one could safely say that underestimating Americans’ love for the Queen was Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s undoing.
