The Palace has announced the sad death of the Duchess of Kent, who lived up to the age of 92, and with the anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s passing approaching in a few days, this is quite tragic timing. A lover of music and an inspiration to the younger generation, Katharine was said to be very humble, which is a stark contrast to the couple who could show up at her upcoming funeral, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. “Prepare for endless talk of whether Harry and his wife will attend,” remarks an online critic.
The user points out how a top article about the news of Katharine’s passing contains the “will he/won’t he” question about the Duke of Sussex. The commenter continues, saying how it’s “truly such a shame that every tragic event becomes about Harry in some way or another.” Another chimes in how it’s so despicable that ‘Harkles’ will typically try to latch on to any notable event to gain some publicity from it. “Sweet Jesus, please make it stop,” begs a third. “May the lovely Duchess of Kent rest in peace without the Harkle circus linked to her passing.”
The backlash continues, with many saying the two have no shame in trying to use their PR to get outlets to mention their names. To be fair, though, people hate the Sussexes so much that PR action is probably not even needed. Harry and Meghan’s relevance thrives on hate and ragebaiting, and whether or not they wish for the opposite doesn’t matter too much at this point, since the hate train is already running at full speed. One commenter remarks, “this BS for every birth, death and everything in between… And it will be that way for a very looooong time because they need the speculation to remain royal-adjacent.” A second adds, “Those two grifters ruin everything. This is so unfair to have them linked to every. single. thing.”
Fortunately, there are plenty of people following Royal news who prefer to ignore Harry and Meghan altogether and focus on celebrating the life of the Duchess of Kent. “Never mind H and Megaphone. Katherine, Duchess of Kent was a lovely lady,” comments a Redditor. They commemorate how Katharine taught music with great passion and was so humble that she preferred her students call her “Mrs. Kent” instead of a royal title. Another added how she taught in a primary school anonymously and without any fanfare to help the local children. Katharine was, of course, involved with many more charitable projects over her lifetime, including charities in the UK and overseas.
Whether intentionally or not, Harry and Meghan will get attention, even for the death of a beloved Royal Family member. We can only hope that people focus more on the Duchess of Kent’s celebrated life than the Sussexes.
