Meghan Markle fell out with Queen Elizabeth during her royal wedding following a disagreement stirred by Prince Harry. The world stopped on May 19, 2018, as Harry walked down the aisle with a biracial American actress who quit Hollywood to commence her royal journey in pursuit of love. However, what was meant to be a significant turning point in history became the onset of a royal rift that would last for four years and counting.
Before the royal wedding, Queen Elizabeth II reportedly had high hopes for Meghan Markle, viewing her biracial identity and American heritage as an asset. The queen hoped Meghan’s presence would enable citizens in the commonwealth to feel represented within the royal family. Hence, she strived to make the Suits alum feel accepted and become part of the family without delay. Sadly, it all came crumbling down when the Sussexes walked away from the royal life, burning bridges behind them.
Prince Harry’s Demands Ruined Queen Elizabeth and Meghan Markle’s Relationship
The Duke of Sussex and his bride decided to leave the royal life behind in 2020, barely two years into their marriage, earning the wrath of the royal family and one-half of a divided public. Their relationship with the royals has only worsened since then. However, it appears the rift began forging even before Harry and Meghan said their “I dos.” According to royal expert Valentine Low, the first signs of a crack in Meghan Markle’s relationship with Queen Elizabeth reared its head in 2018 after the Suits alum disagreed with the monarch’s personal dresser over her choice of tiara for the royal wedding.
In his new book, Coutiers: The Hidden Power Behind the Crown, Valentine claimed the Queen’s dresser, Angela Kelly opted to do things by tradition as expected. However, Prince Harry deemed her “obstructive” for failing to give Meghan Markle access to Queen Mary’s diamond bandeau tiara during the dress trials ahead of her royal wedding. Believing his to-be wife did not receive the respect she deserved, the prince pressured Angela to “bend the rules,” for Meghan, chipping in “some fairly fruity language” as he spoke. Richard Eden, in Daily Mail’s diary editor, addressed the tiara scuffle on Reading the Royals, saying,
“Harry felt that Meghan wasn’t being treated as she should. Everyone should show her great respect, and here was a servant, who was being quite difficult and obstructive. It set a bad tone for the marriage and relationship with the royal family.”
Richard described the tiara disagreement resulting from the pre-wedding trial with Meghan’s hairdresser as “the heart of the problem.” Prince Harry acknowledged this in his book Spare, claiming Queen Elizabeth’s dresser, which was in charge of Her Majesty’s prized jewelry, and the team were difficult to get a hold of. Things worked out eventually, and Meghan Markle ended up wearing Queen Mary’s bandeau tiara at her royal wedding to Prince Harry. But the damage had already taken form.
