Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Online took the gaming world by storm when it was released in 2018. The prequel story following Arthur Morgan and Dutch’s gang received praise for its story, characters, and attention to detail. Red Dead Online, on the other hand, was a bit rocky from the start. The money system was imbalanced, the character creation was minimal, and there was not much to do. Not to mention the strange bugs that spawned piles of skinned horses outside of towns.

But, as Dutch Van der Linde says: “You have got to keep faith!”

Red Dead Online has seen numerous updates since its release. The most recent update, detailed by Rockstar Games, promises a big change for the online world. Rockstar announced the addition of three specialist roles. Each role features a unique progression system and unique rewards.

These roles are meant to push Red Dead Online towards their long term goal, which was detailed in a statement by Rockstar.

“[To create] a world where players coexist in an uneasy peace, choosing to band together or striking out alone, fighting to survive in a world full of threats and opportunities as they build a life for themselves on the frontier.”

The first of these roles is a bounty hunter. This one is pretty self-explanatory. Players fulfilling this role hunt targets with the intention of killing or capturing them. Real-life players can also be bounties if they are naughty enough. Bounty hunters can earn stronger lassos, gun spinning tricks, and updates to eagle eye.

The second role is for the less action-oriented folks Red Dead Online players. The trader allows players to make their camp into a business. Traders collect goods and sell them to other players. They can unlock weapon lockers, stew pots and a canine companion for their camps, which serves as an alarm system when enemies are nearby. Once traders progress along their path, their inventory space can be upgraded as well.

Lastly, there is a collector role for all those explorers out there. These players are the Nathan Drakes of the west. They search the frontier for lost jewelry and all types of treasure. These treasures can be sold for cash. Collectors can achieve upgraded binoculars, a horse lantern, and a metal detector.

Red Dead Online players are not stuck in any one role but can play through all three simultaneously. The other upcoming updates include a more refined, less clunky, control system, more lootable items and the ability to reset a player’s appearance. There will also be damage reduction for defensive players and a system that remembers a player’s playstyle after they turn off the game.

Rockstar did not announce a release date but promised it is coming soon. There are currently no announced plans for any single-player updates.
