Rep. Seth Moulton Says He Was ‘One of the Only White People’ to Vote Against Honoring Charlie Kirk, Sparking Backlash After Massachusetts Senate Defeat

One sentence did it.

Rep. Seth Moulton is drawing backlash after saying he was “one of the only white people” in the House to vote against a resolution honoring Charlie Kirk following Kirk’s assassination. In a clip circulating on X, the Massachusetts Democrat described defying party leadership on the 2025 measure. The comments resurfaced as Moulton lost a Democratic Senate primary to Sen. Ed Markey.

Democrat Seth Moulton brags about voting against honoring Charlie Kirk after he was assassinated:

“When the party establishment told us to vote for the Charlie Kirk resolution…I was…one of the only white people in the House in particular to vote against it.”

The video shows Rep. Seth Moulton speaking outdoors in a parking garage during an NBC News Now interview labeled “Decision 2026.” In the clip, he says he is “not afraid to vote against the party establishment,” then adds, “When the party establishment told us to vote for the Charlie Kirk resolution, to just kind of make it go away, I was one of the only people in the House, actually one of the only white people in the House in particular, to vote against it.” The footage does not include the question that prompted the remark or the rest of the interview.

The comments refer to H.Res. 719, the House resolution honoring Kirk after he was killed in September 2025. Moulton voted no and, in a statement at the time, said he condemned political violence but could not support a measure he argued “attempts to rewrite history.” The clip circulated on primary day in Massachusetts, as Moulton lost the Democratic Senate nomination to Sen. Ed Markey.

Responses to Moulton’s Remarks on the Kirk Vote

Some viewers focused on the comment itself, calling it “Disgusting!” and writing, “He obviously doesn’t know anything about Charlie. Sad.”

Others tied the clip to the Senate result. “And you lost,” one user wrote. Another said, “And now Seth is looking for a job,” while a third added, “I’m glad I voted for Markey, as difficult as that is to admit.”

A separate group described the remark as political positioning. One commenter said, “Loser. He will do and say anything to get elected.”

Another argued Moulton had been “trying to atone” after breaking with Democrats “on protecting girls’ sports.”

For now, the clip has become part of the conversation around Moulton’s Senate campaign and the earlier House vote on Kirk. Online discussion remains focused on how he described that vote, and on what it says about the close of his primary challenge.
