Director Ridley Scott is developing a new movie in the Alien franchise. In an interview with the Scott Free Productions crew, Scott told The Hollywood Reporter about his upcoming projects. He returned to the series in 2012 and never really left.
Scott served as a producer on Alien: Romulus. He characterized himself as an editor on that project, but his role on the next entry is less clear. THR writer James Hibberd stated that Scott “revealed he’s developing a new Alien movie for 20th in the wake of Romulus’ success.” During the interview, Scott states, “I know what I’m doing for the next three years.”
The Blade Runner director could be a producer or director on the project. Romulus made a whopping $350 million on a modest $80 million budget. THR spoke to Steve Asbell, president of 20th Century Studios, on October 24th. When asked about Romulus, he stated, “We’re working on a sequel idea now.” It’s reasonable to assume that Scott could be working on that Romulus sequel, but he could also be involved in another Alien project.
We’re entering a great new era for the Alien franchise. Romulus brought the beloved space horror series back to basics, but there’s plenty of room to grow. Ridley Scott remains a good steward of the Alien franchise. Between Alien entries, Scott made time to finally deliver a sequel to his beloved Gladiator.
Some still cry out for a conclusion to his prequel films. Scott directed Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, but there could still be more to that series. There’s no telling what kind of Alien film Scott is working on now. Scott will also serve as a producer on the first Alien TV show, Noah Hawley’s Alien: Earth.
For the unaware, Scott directed the original 1979 classic, then returned to flesh out the lore through his prequels. Scott didn’t craft the most recent entry, but his voice remains integral to the series. That story, combined with the confirmed sequel to Alien: Romulus, has fans wondering what Scott will do next.
Thankfully, it looks like Xenomorph fans won’t have to wait long to see their favorite killing machine infest their screens again.
