Rihanna hinted to fans what they should expect from her at the Super Bowl halftime performance next month. The teaser, released on Friday, January 13, showed the singer stepping into the spotlight with a yellow fur coat. She completed her ensemble with flashy jewelry, a pop of color, and vibrant makeup.
The 34-year-old stepped into the light amid sound bites of fans playing in the background. “Yo, Rihanna, we’ve waited for you,” one fan said in the video. Another voice said it had been over 2,000 days since she last performed live.
“RiRi, where have you been?!” another fan screamed before the designer made a shushing gesture. Her hit track, Needed Me, then played at the end.
The clip is not the first teaser Rihanna is releasing this year. Earlier this week, the National Football League posted a video of Rihanna wearing a Fenty-branded football hoodie that she first posted to her Instagram story. The singer also posted it on her Instagram on January 9. “[Five] weeks from today,” the post teased.
Rihanna Once Turned Down Halftime At Superbowl
Rihanna first announced in September 2022 that she would perform in the 2023 Superbowl halftime show. The performance will be produced by DPS, with Jesse Collins and Roc Nation as executive producers and Hamish Hamilton as director.
Meanwhile, although this will be Rihanna’s first Superbowl performance, it is not her first invitation. In 2018, the Kiss It Better hitmaker was approached to perform the halftime show for Super Bowl LIII in Atlanta.
However, she turned it down amid controversy surrounding the NFL’s treatment of Colin Kaepernick. The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback was praised and criticized for taking a knee during the national anthem in protest of police brutality and social injustice.
Adam Levine’s pop rock band, Maroon 5, eventually headlined the show along with special guests Big Boi and Travis Scott.
Rihanna’s headlining gig will also be the first to be sponsored by Apple Music, which is taking over the reins from Pepsi.
Fans are excitedly looking forward to Rihanna’s performance next month. Thankfully, the singer has excellent producers working with her. Hopefully, Rihanna wows everyone eagerly anticipating her return to music.
