After the State of the Union, several celebrities spoke about it and Trump in general. One of those celebrities was Robert De Niro. He made an appearance at the State of the Swamp, which was a counter-event to Trump’s. A video of De Niro talking that circulated online wasn’t warmly received.

In the video, De Niro starts by saying, “I feel betrayed by my country.” He believes that America doesn’t have to be perfect, but it should return to the values that “gave us our strength and humanity.” The major thing that caused backlash, though, was when the actor encouraged people to protest. “If we want our leaders to be accountable, if you’re devoted to the constitution and the rule of law, if you want the United States of America to be worthy of your love, be ready to take to the streets together and we will take our country back.” While many people support De Niro’s call for protest, others have also criticized it, especially Trump supporters.

People Reacting to Robert De Niro Calling for Protests

Those who were against what Robert De Niro said absolutely dragged him. One person believed that America didn’t need protests as they said, “Yeah that’s just what you guys need, more protests, more violence. What an embarrassment he is.” Another person said, “Rich through capitalism, pretends to hate capitalism.” Someone else pointed out De Niro’s wealth as they said, “LOL. The same values that’s given him a 500 million net worth ? Give me a break.” One Redditor also believed that the actor doesn’t care about protesters. “‘Some of you may die – but that’s a risk that I’m willing to take’ Robert De Niro,” they wrote.

More people dragged De Niro, with one person claiming he is telling people to protest, but he won’t do the same. “He won’t be protesting. But you will,” they wrote. Another person said, “Maybe DeNiro should try and make a good movie. His last one was Goodfellas.” Someone else added, “The crybaby deniro the man has always been a crybaby! He fooled people with his acting into believing he was a tough guy! He was never tough.”

There were a few comments that supported the actor as well, including one that read, “Robert for 2028!! I’d vote for him!” One person also said, “Robert De Niro is a real one for this.”
