Rockstar Games has acquired roleplay modders Cfx.re, best known for fostering a roleplaying community within Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2. Rockstar announced the news in an official community update and further revealed that the mod policy for Grand Theft Auto Online had been expanded to include those from role-playing communities. More details will likely be shared in the coming months on what, if anything, this acquisition means for GTA 6.

That hasn’t stopped excitement brewing among the fandom in the hope that Rockstar could be working with the roleplay modders to take the necessary steps and incorporate real support for roleplay in GTA in the future.

Rockstar’s Commitment to Role-Playing?

Rockstar said of their relationship with the roleplay modders:

“Over the past few years, we’ve watched with excitement as Rockstar’s creative community has found new ways to expand the possibilities of Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, particularly through the creation of dedicated roleplay servers. By partnering with the Cfx.re team, we will help them find new ways to support this incredible community and improve the services they provide to their developers and players.”

More details will likely be shared in the coming months on what, if anything, this acquisition means for GTA 6. But that hasn’t stopped excitement brewing among the fandom in the hope that Rockstar could work with the roleplay modders to take the necessary steps and incorporate real support for roleplay in GTA.

This move is surprising because Rockstar battled against the roleplay modders. Its parent company, Take Two, attempted to thwart Cfx.re efforts entirely through private investigators. It’s clear Rockstar sees the potential roleplay modders can offer GTA 6. Earlier this year the FiveM mod developed by Cfx.re saw a concurrent player count of 270,000.

Cfx.re has become renowned amongst GTA players for its immersive role-playing mod FiveM. The selling point of FiveM is the hyper-realistic experience it offers players. Rather than causing chaos in the streets of Los Santos, players can adopt an NPC and live a bland life if they want to. If players give in temptation and get trigger-happy, they are promptly banned from the server for breaking immersion.

In FiveM, players must strictly adhere to the expected behavioral patterns of their character. There are plenty of options though if a quiet life doesn’t suit you, the many updates which have since been added to FiveM allow you to take the role of an ambulance driver, paramedic or police officer. The only real limitation in FiveM falls on the player’s imagination.

If Rockstar wants to dabble with roleplay elements going forward, then there’s no better team than Cfx.re to help them along the way.
