Rosario Dawson is no stranger to comic book movies. She recently voiced Batgirl in the LEGO Batman Movie, she also flits between Netflix shows like Daredevil and Luke Cage as Claire Temple and will be appearing in the massive crossover show The Defenders. Dawson is currently in talks to join yet another superhero franchise, as Empire Online reports she is in talks with director Josh Boone to appear in his upcoming X-Men: The New Mutants.
Although she has not yet signed on, Dawson is reportedly playing the role of Dr. Cecilia Reyes, a mentor for the team of fledgling superheroes. Dr. Reyes herself is a mutant with the ability to project a force field around herself to protect from harm.
As of right now, the only actors that have been cast in The New Mutants are Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch, Split) and Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones). Taylor-Joy has been cast as Magik, the younger sister of X-Men veteran Colossus. Magik has teleportation powers and also possesses (hence the name) magical abilities. Williams will be playing Wolfsbane, a Scottish orphan who can turn into a werewolf-like creature.
X-Men: The New Mutants is scheduled to start shooting in July, with an anticipated release in the spring of 2018. Director Josh Boone has stated that he is trying to take the franchise in a new direction, telling Entertainment Weekly: “We are making a full-fledged horror movie set within the X-Men universe. There are no costumes. There are no supervillains. We’re trying to do something very, very different.”
Stay tuned for more news on The New Mutants as it becomes available.
