Even if Final Fantasy 16 is right around the corner, many players are waiting for Cloud’s next adventure in the latest remake series Square Enix has made. The first one did fantastic critically and commercially, which is why the developers are going for a trilogy with these remakes. While some players don’t like that since they feel it’s a way to milk a precious game, others don’t mind getting a modern take on the cult classic. And even if there’s little information out there, a recent interview suggests the possibility of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth featuring an open world when it launches.

As always, take this with a grain of salt because it hasn’t been confirmed, but due to a recent interview, many players interpreted the answer as such. In an official post, the developers mentioned: “Players will be able to journey across the wide and multifaceted world with a high degree of freedom.” This instantly made players think about Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s possibility of featuring an open-world mechanic or something similar. Some are happy about this, while others would prefer a linear story which is what the first game offered.

On the other hand, players wouldn’t mind having a semi-open world like God of War: Ragnarok or Jedi: Survivor for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. It is still too early to say this is definitive, but if it is, it would be something fresh for this game. A semi-open world would work better, which is what Final Fantasy 16 is doing. Open-world games are not bad, but doing a good one takes time. A few can feel repetitive, like Hogwarts Legacy or any Ubisoft game, and others feel empty, like Redfall. Whatever the developers choose, we hope it is the best for players and keeps the things we love from the original Final Fantasy 7 game.
