San Andreas rocked the box office this weekend with a $53.2 million opening which easily took the top spot from last weeks “winner”, Tomorrowland. Other new release Aloha disappointed with $10 million which wasn’t enough to make it into the Top 5.

San Andreas, which starred Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, shows that Dwayne Johnson can secure a box office hit (kind of). Before the disaster film, the last time we saw Dwayne Johnson in a film he led was last years Hercules which brought in a so-so $29.8m to a total of $72.6m. Though Dwayne Johnson has risen as a bankable actor as he has been featured in the past three instalments of the Fast & Furious franchise as well appeared in other franchises including G.I. Joe & the Journey series.

San Andreas should hold well till mid-June when Jurassic World releases. The disaster film should be able to at least bring in $150 at the domestic box office by the end of its run.

The rest of the box office, Pitch Perfect 2 held onto the second spot as it dropped 53% with a take of $14.3m. The acapella musical has now reached $147.5m at the domestic box office and reached $228.2m at the worldwide box office.

Tomorrowland took a large fall this weekend with a hefty 58% drop to $13.8m. The Sci-Fi Disney film directed by Brad Bird opened last week to mixed reception. The film stands at $63.1m and will finish shy of $100 million.

Mad Max: Fury Road brought in $13.6m for a total of $115 million. The film continues to be critically praised by both fans and critics and it has now been shown worldwide as the film has reached $280 million at the worldwide box office.

Avengers: Age of Ultron was able to stick it out in the Top 5 for the final week of May as the movie brought in $10.9 million. The Marvel team-up film stands at $427 million at the domestic box office and at $1.32 billion at the worldwide box office which has it ranked 6th of all time grosses.

Lastly, newcomer Aloha failed to make a big impact in the midst of Summer box office season with a $10 million opening weekend. The film which stars Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone, Rachel McAdams and more were not able to push through the poor reception that Cameron Crowe romantic comedy has been receiving. The film should hold well as his movies had in the past. Around a $30 million finish seems possible.

Check out next week, when Entourage, Spy and Insidious: Chapter 3 compete for the top spot!

1. San Andreas – $53.2m
2. Pitch Perfect 2 – $14.3m
3. Tomorrowland – $13.8m
4. Mad Max: Fury Road – $13.6m
5. Avengers: Age of Ultron – $10.9m
