One of horror’s biggest icons is back to his glory days as we return to our favorite torturous game this year. Saw XI has had a major development as its director has been announced to be Kevin Greutert. The filmmaker helmed last year’s brutal return to form, Saw X, along with VI and 3D.
The filmmaker has had a long history with horror, especially having much of this time with John Kramer. He was an editor on some early installments of the first five films and then returned to edit Jigsaw.
Saw XI Director Kevin Greutert Gives Hope for Another Solid Installment
The latest update on Saw XI came from Bloody Disgusting. This is the first major development we have heard for the anticipated sequel. Due to the success of the last film, speculation has focused on a continuation of this direction to tell more prequel stories with Tobin Bell and Shawnee Smith and maybe other returning stars from the franchise’s best days. We know Saw X writers Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger will not return to pen the script.
Spiral and Jigsaw were previous attempts to revive the franchise. After struggling to find the magic, Lionsgate hired the Saw veteran to helm the tenth main installment, which ended up as a prequel set between the first two films. The impressive box office of $109 million led to Kevin Greutert being hired again for Saw XI. Last year’s entry was the first to reach $100 million since 2010’s Saw 3D.
Amanda and John Kramer’s return was more impressive when it received such positive reviews. Saw X was the first in the franchise to reach a Fresh certification from Rotten Tomatoes at 80%. Going back to its roots while telling a stronger, more personal story for its leads, it captured audiences and critics, unlike previous entries.
