After the critical acclaim and box office dethroning of No Way Home this past weekend, the Scream(2022) franchise reboot has brought a whole slew of new fans and old, who want Scream 6 to become a reality as its been trending on social media! Scream(2022) comes almost a decade after the last release and is co-directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. The Scream torch was passed down to the thriller directing duo of Ready or Not after the death of past Scream director Wes Craven. Gillett and Bettinelli-Olpin spoke in an interview with Variety recently and discussed the experience they had while making Scream(2022). They also stated that they would be “be crazy not to want to continue it” and come back for a Scream 6.
A Brand New ‘Scream’ Franchise
The new directors’ hopes were not just to pay homage to the past movies but also to make a brand new series of Scream movies. With Scream 6 trending on social media and Scream 5 booming in the box office after opening weekend, I’m sure we’ll have another Scream in store. Courtney Cox mentioned that even know this is the fifth Scream installment; it’s technically not Scream 5. On the Drew Barrymore show, Cox said,
“This is Scream. The directors are incredible, they’re making it absolutely…it’s a new franchise… It’s hip. It’s scary. It’s just a new Scream. It’s not a reboot, it’s not a remake, it’s just a brand-new launch. I think it’s gonna be fantastic.”
Scream(2022) Dethrones Spider-Man at the Box Office
According to Box Office Mojo, Scream(2022) opened this weekend and took the top spot on the results chart grossing 30.0 Million for its opening weekend while dethroning Spider-Man. Spider-Man: No Way Home has been ruling the box office since its release a month ago. But this past weekend, January 14th to the 17th, the box office results came out with Scream(2022) on top. NWH totaled this weekend around 10 million less than Scream and took in 20.8 Million. Spider-Man: No Way Home has been breaking box office records the past five weeks and has accumulated over 698.0 Million in total, and we don’t think it’s stopping any time soon.
If you’re wondering about the plot of Scream(2022), here is IMDB’s synopsis of the film’s plot: “Twenty-five years after the original series of murders in Woodsboro, a new Ghostface emerges, and Sidney Prescott must return to uncover the truth.” The newest installment in the decades-long Scream series features old and new faces. Among the Scream veterans, we have Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, and David Arquette. As far as Scream newcomers, we have Dylan Minnette of Wallows and Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why, Melissa Barrera of In the Heights, and Jack Quaid from Amazon Prime’s hit show, The Boys.
