‘So much for family values’: Ohio Blasts Republicans For Abandoning Principles as Max Miller Stays in Race Despite Controversy

Ohio Congressman Max Miller says he is staying in the race for reelection despite renewed scrutiny over domestic abuse allegations made by his ex-wife, a decision that has sparked a wave of angry reactions from Ohio residents online.

The Republican lawmaker announced on X that he has no plans to withdraw from the November race, insisting, “I’m not getting out of this race and I’m winning in November.” Miller has repeatedly denied abusing his former wife, Emily Moreno, or their young daughter, and has shared documents he says support his position.

The controversy intensified after U.S. Sen. Bernie Moreno, Miller’s former father-in-law, publicly broke his silence and declared that Miller should not remain in office. The Ohio senator called his former son-in-law “dangerous” and said he believes Miller should seek professional help, while expressing concern for his daughter and granddaughter.

Emily Moreno has accused Miller of multiple incidents of abuse during and after their marriage, including allegations involving hot water and a firearm (first reported by Akron Beacon Journal). Miller denies those claims and has sued Moreno for defamation. The allegations have not resulted in criminal charges, and the former couple remains involved in an ongoing custody dispute.

While the political fallout continues, many Ohio residents discussing the story online focused less on the legal battle and more on what they see as a disconnect between Republican messaging and the party’s response to one of its own.

Ohio Turns Frustration Toward Republican Leadership

One of the most upvoted comments in a discussion on the Ohio subreddit summed up a recurring theme in just five words: “So much for family values.”

That sentiment echoed throughout the thread, where commenters questioned whether Republican leaders consistently apply the principles they often campaign on. Several users argued that the party speaks about protecting families while failing to hold members accountable when serious allegations emerge.

Others pointed to the timing of Sen. Moreno’s condemnation, with some suggesting they believed the response came only after mounting public pressure and increased national attention. Those views reflect opinions expressed by Reddit users and are not established facts.

Some commenters also argued that the controversy reflects broader dissatisfaction with Republican leadership in Ohio and nationally. Posts accused the party of prioritizing political survival over principles, while others claimed voters have become accustomed to overlooking scandals involving elected officials.

Not every participant agreed with the harshest claims. Some users cautioned against making accusations that extend beyond publicly reported allegations, emphasizing that claims should be supported by evidence. Others noted that Miller remains entitled to deny the accusations against him and that the legal process is still ongoing.

Miller faces Democrat Brian Poindexter in Ohio’s 7th Congressional District this November. Republicans had until Aug. 10 to replace Miller on the ballot, but with the congressman making clear he intends to stay in the race, attention is now shifting toward whether the controversy will influence voters in a district long considered favorable to Republicans.
