Having so many streaming services sometimes sees franchises split into different homes. In 2021, Sony struck a deal to deliver its Spider-Man movies, including Venom, to Disney Plus. Now, that deal has gone through as we have expected dates for a majority of the company’s films starring the web-slinger.
Sony has the rights to Spider-Man, so it has been complicated for the Marvel brand when it includes the superhero in various media, including its franchise, the MCU. The films coming to the service will include all three of the Sam Raimi films starring Tobey Maguire on April 21. The Amazing Spider-Man, which Andrew Garfield led, will arrive on the same day. Swinging behind them, the first Tom Holland standalone film, Homecoming, will web into the Marvel section of the streaming service with Tom Hardy’s first Venom movie on May 12.
The Sony Spider-Man movies and Venom are coming to Disney Plus
The deal between the two companies will bring a significant portion of Sony’s filmography over to Disney’s various platforms. This will include Disney Plus, Disney Channel, Hulu FX, ABC, and Freeform. This deal landed around the time Sony struck a deal with Netflix. Theatrically run movies will hit Netflix before going to Mickey Mouse. Sony’s other movies and TV shows are expected to start arriving on Disney Plus later this year.
Sony having Spider-Man on Disney Plus is nothing new. The streamer offers plenty of animated shows, including the classic ’90s animated series Spidey and his Amazing Friends and Spider-Man Unlimited. Two years ago, the streamer announced that it is also developing a prequel for Holland’s Peter Parker in 2024 with Spider-Man: Freshman Year.
For other Spider-Man movies Sony has developed with Marvel Studios, those are across different streamers, including Hulu. When those will come to Disney Plus, like No Way Home and Far From Home, to complete the Holland trilogy is unknown.
