What people do behind closed doors in their private homes is their business. However, one Oregon apartment worker couldn’t help but wonder about the story behind a creepily stained mattress thrown away by the complex’s dumpsters. Going by BorderlineDelusional on Reddit, they shared photos of the scene on r/whatisit under the posted title, “Please tell me it’s not what I think it is.”
At a glance, the sight is rather horrifyingly gross: an old white mattress with large, layered reddish-brown stains on one side of it. Redditors began making backstories about what could have happened on the visually disturbing mattress. “Someone died on that,” remarked a commenter.
“It honestly really reminds me of the FBI photos of when they pulled Jeffrey Dahmer’s mattress out...” wrote a second user. “Have you smelled it?” asked a third, to which OP responded jokingly, “No, shall I taste as well?”
Several people began putting down their own experiences and stories; a few believed it could have been from someone who was pregnant or birthing a child. Some others thought it was an injury that left a lot of blood that dried.
However, one person refuted that theory, sharing the story of the death of a loved one as evidence. “My sister died in her bed and it was much more pooled in a certain location and went in deep. This did remind me of that, but this doesn’t look like that,” the Redditor wrote.
The Post Only Shows the Bottom of the Mattress, So OP Investigates the Top
The top-upvoted comment on the post pointed out how the stained area was the bottom of the mattress, leaving many curious about what the top side looked like. As requested, BorderlineDelusional checked the top and was surprised: there was just a round yellow stain, much smaller than the bottom side.
That’s when OP finally took the investigation a step further. Wearing gloves and equipped with a knife, they cut open the mattress to check the inside. BorderlineDelusional discovered what they believe is the reason behind the stain: dog pee.
“I think it’s rust from dogs pissing in the mattress,” OP surmised. “I cut open the bottom, and the springs are rusty, and this is the bottom of the mattress. So I’m pretty sure it’s safe to say it’s solved!”
In the end, the conclusion isn’t as sinister or appalling as some people had guessed, which is a good thing for BorderlineDelusional, considering they work at the apartment where the mattress’s former owner lives.
