Floating in space will do a lot of damage to someone’s mental health. Netflix has released the first trailer of Spaceman, which sees Adam Sandler as an astronaut in emotional distress (seen below). The film also stars Carey Mulligan as his wife, and Paul Dano is a spider-like alien whom he meets. The three A-listers are also joined by Kunal Nayyar, Isabella Rossellini, Leno Olin, and Marian Roden.
Jakub Procházka (Sandler) goes on to become the first Czech astronaut. He leaves behind a troubled marriage to embrace his dream of traveling through space. The time alone starts to weigh on him. As his mental health hits an all-time low, he meets Hanus (Dano), an alien who is also a traveler like him. Regardless of whether the alien is imaginary or real, he helps Jakub on his journey to make it back home with his sanity intact.
Spaceman Trailer Sees Adam Sandler Back in a Dramatic Role for Netflix
The film is based on the novel Spaceman of Bohemia by Czech author Jaroslav Kalfař. The adaptation was penned by Colby Day for the writer’s first major film. It was directed by Johan Renck, who is best known for directing all five episodes of Craig Mazin’s Chornobyl. Renck executive produced with Ben Ormand and Barry Bernardi. Channing Tatum, Reid Carolin, Peter Kiernan, Michael Parets, Tim Headington, Lia Buman, and Max Silva served as the film’s producers.
Spaceman is the next big dramatic role for Adam Sandler. After years of being known for his specific type of comedies in the ’90s and ’00s, he surprised everyone with 2019’s Uncut Gems, in which he played a fast-talking jeweler desperate to dig himself out of debt. He will reunite with the Safdie brothers and Netflix for the project that is about sports memorabilia with Megan Thee Stallion.
Spaceman will be released on the streaming service on March 1. Unlike some recent films from the company, this will not have a theatrical run.
