Spelunky is a classic among the indie games of the early 2010s. There’s so much to love in not only its humorous charm but also its wonderfully crafted levels. Developer Mossmouth put a lot of time into the original, and it clearly shows. To our surprise though, Spelunky 2 was announced at one of the recent PlayStation events this Summer. The wonderful mine dwelling title finally has a sequel, and now it’s time for PlayStation 4 users to start digging. Spelunky 2 is now available for $19.99 on the PS4, with the PC (Steam) version to arrive two weeks from now. You can find the launch trailer for the game below.
Spelunky 2 continues the roguelike’s legacy with new features, a new world, and new challenges! It builds upon what the original does for gameplay, retaining that classic feel while being updated to feel fresh for veterans of the series. As a solo spelunker or up to three other friends locally or online, you’ll explore the deepest depths of the Moon and uncover interesting secrets. The Moon promises to hold much bigger secrets than what we saw in the original Spelunky, making for a much richer experience than before.
It looks exciting from the trailer, offering up something new while retaining that classic feel. Not many sequels prove better than the original, but Spelunky 2 is on its way to do just that. It’s great to see just how far this series has come, considering it started as a very basic title with Spelunky Classic back in 2008. Fast forward to today, and all these features go beyond what the developer could’ve envisioned 12 years ago. They should be proud of themselves, coming this far and making yet another wonderful game.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on Spelunky 2 though. Do you think its spelunking goodness holds up well in 2020? Any other indie game sequels you’re hungering for? Let me know, and stay tuned at The Nerd Stash for all your news, reviews, and more!
