Sequels can be difficult, but it is possible to swing above the predecessor. Reviews for Spider-Man 2 have dropped, and its Metacritic score rivals Insomniac’s best games. At 91 from about 120 reviews, it earns the review aggregator’s coveted Must-Play badge. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 webs up its two predecessors, Spider-Man and Miles Morales, including the remaster of the 2018 game in terms of Metacritic scores. Both versions of the first time players got to experience the PlayStation studio’s take on Peter Parker had landed an 87. Miles, taking the spotlight for his smaller adventure, swung in for an 85.
Spider-Man 2 Rivals Ratchet & Clank and More of Insomniac’s Best Games on Metacritic
It has been nearly 20 years since Insomniac reached a Metacritic score this high. Its last 91 was for 2004’s Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal. The latest entry of the franchise, 2021’s Rift Apart, flew to an 88. The only other 90+ score was 2000’s Spyro: Year of the Dragon.
On Metacritic, Spider-Man 2 is in the top 15 best games of 2023. It has been one of the best years in gaming, with sequels and new IP from both AAA studios and lesser-known indie houses. Peter and Miles have tied with Diablo 4, Sea of Stars, Turbo Overkill, and Resident Evil 4: Separate Ways.
2023 has seen almost 30 games reach the 90 mark on the review aggregator. Only a few of those have reached a level that puts them at some of the best-reviewed games of all time. Baldur’s Gate 3 and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom tie with 96. Between those and other big releases this year, the discussions of Game of the Year will be interesting as there are so many games from different genres to pick from.
Spider-Man 2 will be released on October 20 for PS5.
