Sony seems to have great confidence in building its Spider-Man franchise. Despite the lackluster reviews of Venom, they are pushing forward and announcing more movies. Their live-action Amazing Spider-Man movies were met with average success. So they are now taking their opportunity to dive into the animated world. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse will be coming to theaters December 14, 2018. Despite the fact that it hasn’t been released yet, Sony has already announced a sequel and a spinoff.

Into the Spider-Verse stars Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) in a world that allows for the various versions of Spider-Man to cross paths. It will feature the original Peter Parker (Jake Johnson), Spider-Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld), Peni Parker, Spider-Ham, and Spider-Man Noir. This will also feature several villains, giving Sony a bigger avenue in which to include these villains in other movies. It is being co-directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman.

Not much is know at this point about the sequel or spinoff. The sequel is being directed by Joaquim Dos Santos. The all-female spinoff is being helmed by Lauren Montgomery and will have Spider-Gwen as the central character. Other heroes expected to make an appearance are Spider-Woman, Madame Web, Spider-Girl, and Silk.

It certainly is a modern move that makes Sony stand out by having Into the Spider-Verse be led by a black character and to be developing an all-female movie. After the incredible success of Marvel’s Black Panther, it’s opened the door for more diverse superheroes. Audiences not only will watch these movies, but they want them to happen. That being said, Sony hasn’t had the massive success Marvel has had thus far, and it’s a bold move to already declare two more movies for Spider-Verse with the first not even being released yet.

It appears Sony is laying the groundwork to fully dive into the Spider-Man franchise. If these animated movies do well, it will be easier for them to make live-action spinoffs with the characters. Only time will tell if it’s successful.
