Filmmaker and producer Spike Lee had to be held back after a fan asked him to insult Palestine while he was at Yankee Stadium in New York.
Spike Lee has publicly shown support for Palestinians, particularly since the start of the genocide in Gaza in 2023. In 2024, the filmmaker participated in the Cinema for Gaza fundraiser, which raised money to provide medical support to Palestinians in Gaza. He also made his support more visible in February 2026 when he attended NBA All-Star Weekend wearing a keffiyeh-patterned sweater and carrying a bag with a Palestinian flag-inspired strap. Lee later explained that the clothing represented his concern for Palestinian children and civilians and his belief in human dignity for everyone.
The viral moment happened while the filmmaker was attending the game between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. According to the New York Post, Lee entered the Legends Suite, where he was friendly with people and took selfies with some of those around him.
A fan approached Lee for a selfie before asking him to say “[expletive] Palestine.” The request appeared to anger the director, who became visibly upset and had to be held back. It was also reported that Lee called for security and that the fan was kicked out following the interaction.
In the video, Lee could be seen being held back while wearing red Yankees gear. He could also be heard yelling, “Why’d you come over to me?” at another person. The video then showed a man pointing toward someone and telling them, “You’ve gotta go. You’ve gotta go.” A source told the New York Post that the fan was “absolutely wrong” and “ruined our [expletive] meal.” It remains unclear whether the stadium plans to take any further action against the unidentified fan.
The interaction also drew attention to Lee’s longstanding support for Palestinians. Many people online defended his reaction to the fan. His response was viewed by some as consistent with the position he has expressed through his past support for Palestinians. This includes his participation in the Cinema for Gaza fundraiser and his public concern for Palestinian civilians.
Fans Support Spike Lee After Altercation at New York Stadium
Fans online quickly showed support for Spike Lee following the interaction at Yankee Stadium in New York. Many believed that his reaction was justified. “Most justified crashout 2026,” one person wrote. Others criticized the individual involved, with another person asking, “What loser asked that?”
More people praised the director following the interaction. “Common Spike Lee W,” one person said. Another person wrote, “Another day, another post proving I am correct for stanning this man.” Someone else added, “waiting for the zionists to come play victim over how antisemitic they will say it was of spike lee to not say [expletive] Palestine.”
The video also highlighted how some viewers appreciate celebrities standing by their publicly expressed views. At the same time, the interaction led some people to criticize the decision to deliberately provoke a celebrity by asking them to make an offensive statement.
