There are two major philosophical questions that permeate our existence – why is there something rather than nothing and when is the next Star Trek theatrical film coming out? While the former is a long way off from confirmation, the latter question is closer to an answer. Deadline reports that TV writer Kalinda Vazquez has been hired by Paramount Pictures to write a new Star Trek feature film.
And what’s more, Vazquez has experience in the Star Trek universe already. She has written for the hit show Star Trek Discovery, the fourth season of which is currently in the works. The movie in question is reportedly based on an idea she hatched herself. J.J Abrams’ production company Bad Robot is set to produce it.
A follow-up to 2016’s Star Trek Beyond has been languishing in development hell for years. After some pay dispute drama was settled, it was thought the Abramverse cast would return to the fold. However, Simon Pegg, who plays Scotty in the aforementioned films, later claimed to have no knowledge of the cast returning.
For a long time, Quentin Tarantino was attached to helm a new Star Trek movie. However, in December 2019, it was reported that the legendary Director had left the movie to pursue lower-budget projects. January 2020, Tarantino claimed the film “might” be made, but he would not direct it. Currently, there’s no information on who is directing Kalinda Vazquez’s feature.
Whether Vasquez’s film is going to continue the Kelvin Timeline established in Abrams’ movies is unknown. At this point, it could very well be another reboot altogether. Only time will tell how the idea develops and when the release date for the new Star Trek is known.
