Steven Spielberg is set to direct a new Frank Bullitt film inspired by the iconic Steve McQueen character from the 1968 film Bullitt. Deadline reports that Spielberg will both direct the film as well as co-produce with Kristie Macosko Krieger. Josh Singer (who wrote Spielberg’s 2017 film The Post) is set to write the screenplay. The film will be distributed by Warner Bros. However, this likely will not be the next film Spielberg directs, as no scripts or deals have been finalized. Spielberg has recently come off of directing West Side Story (nominated for seven Oscars), and he is presently at work on his new film, The Fabelmans.

The original Bullitt from 1968 starred Steve McQueen as Frank Bullitt; a police lieutenant hired to protect a gangster who was to testify against the mob. His efforts are thwarted when the gangster is murdered, and Bullitt sets out to track down the killers. The Hollywood Reporter says that the film was one of McQueen’s more enduring roles. It won the Frank P. Keller the 1969 Oscar for Best Editing, and it was also nominated for Best Sound. Bullitt is known for its San Francisco car chase, widely regarded as one of the most influential car chases ever filmed.

Spielberg is the most commercially successful director alive. He has three Oscars to his name, specifically Best Picture and Best Director for Schndler’s List (1993) and Best Director for Saving Private Ryan (1998). Click to read our list of Spielberg’s ten best films.
