Award-winning 2022 game Stray is going in the line of video game adaptions as Annapurna Interactive is turning it into an animated movie. No director or writer has been attached to the film. Unless major studio support comes in, the film should move forward despite the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, as some indie movies have been given a pass to move forward because of small to no studio support.
The adventure puzzle game follows a lost cat in a sci-fi world. The cat goes through dangerous situations and meets friendly robots to find a way home. The gameplay loop focused on puzzles, platforming, stealth, and doing silly things only a cat would do. It received praise for its aesthetics and for capturing how cat’s interact with the world, with its adventurous sci-fi twist.
Stray Goes From Consoles and PC to the Big Screen as an Animated Movie
The news about Stray becoming an animated movie was broken by Entertainment Weekly. Annapurna Animation co-leader Robert Baird explained that the game being about “what makes us human” without any humans was a core part of its heart that attracted the idea of making it into a film. The levity also was an aspect as it is a “buddy comedy about a cat and a robot [B-12].” Of course, the game’s popularity was a driving factor as it sold millions of copies on PC, PS4, and PS5.
The adaption is another win for the debut game of BlueTwelve Studio. The French developer received numerous nominations and wins at gaming award shows. At The Game Awards, it was nominated for seven awards and won Best Indie and Best Debut Indie. Some of its nominations included Game of the Year, Best Game Direction, Best Art Direction, and Best Action/Adventure Game.
There is no timeline for the Stray animated movie. For now, you can check it out on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
