According to a post made by the official Nintendo of America Twitter account, Super Mario Maker 2 has officially crossed the 5 million mark for user-created and uploaded courses.

This doesn’t come as too much of a surprise; following the first installment in the series, Super Mario Maker 2 sold over 2.4 million copies in just it’s first 3 days, more than half of what the original Super Mario Maker sold in almost 3 years.
This Looks Like the Norm for Nintendo
Super Mario Maker 2‘s success is strongly indicative of Nintendo’s overwhelmingly powerful performance in this console generation. In the same fiscal quarter, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sold another 1.2 million units to hit a total of 17.89 million copies sold worldwide, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate grew closer to overtaking Super Mario Odyssey as the Switch’s second best-selling game. All of this is on top of Nintendo shifting well over 37 million Switch consoles, continuing to creep up on Microsoft to outsell the Xbox One.

This is, of course, fantastic news for Nintendo, given the company’s console sales from console generations prior. The Wii U is notorious for being a “failed” console, selling only 13.5 million units, and the curse goes back even to the GameCube, which had a lifetime sales peak of 22 million units due to the overwhelming dominance of the PlayStation 2 at the time. As a result, it’s refreshing to see Nintendo back in the game, even if a lot of their success can be attributed to the decision to take their console in an entirely different direction than industry giants Sony and Microsoft.
Given the Switch’s stellar lineup over the next year or so, one can only assume that their user base will continue to grow, and the kind of community interaction displayed by Super Mario Maker 2 players will simply become the norm. That’s great news for Nintendo, but is even better news for we the players; with games like Pokémon Sword and Shield and Animal Crossing: New Horizons slated for release soon, we’re sure to have no shortage of amazing games to keep us entertained for a good while.
