Nichole Sakura, known for her performance as Cheyenne Lee in NBC‘s Superstore, has joined the English-speaking cast of Suzume, coming soon to Crunchyroll. Sakura, whose other previous roles include Maggie on Hulu, is set to play the title character of Suzume, a teenage girl who accidentally unleashes supernatural horrors on her hometown and now has to race to fix the situation before it’s too late.
Suzume, originally titled Suzume no tojimari, was created by Makoto Shinkai and made its original debut in Japan in November. Anime-streaming service Crunchyroll acquired the rights to distribute Suzume internationally (at least, outside of Asia) at the Cannes Film Festival last year. According to Deadline, Suzume will star Nichole Sakura as the titular 17-year-old Suzume. Her journey begins in Kyushu, a town in southwestern Japan, where she encounters a strange young man who tells her, “I’m looking for a door.” When Suzume finds a strange door standing alone in the middle of some ruins, she goes to open it – and “doors begin to open one after another all across Japan, unleashing destruction upon any who are near. Suzume must then close these portals to prevent further disaster.”
