Marvel has mixed it up with different directors taking on a character, and it looks like it may want something new. Taika Waititi has confirmed that he won’t direct or be involved with Thor 5. He found success in directing the last two films for the Chris Hemsworth-starring character, but Love and Thunder was a bit of a miss and blunder.
Taika Waititi on Not Going to Direct Thor 5 and What’s Next
In an interview with Business Insider to promote his new movie, Next Goal Wins, the director confirmed he will step away from the blockbuster franchise. While he has no information on the next film of the Norse corner of the MCU, he knows he “won’t be involved.” He is going to “concentrate on these other films that I’ve signed on for.”
Ragnarok and Love and Thunder had vastly different receptions. The former was a beloved hit that was a refreshing take on the character. Love and Thunder pushed the comedy further, to the point of losing some critics and audience members. The two were still hits as Ragnarok grossed $850 million, and the post-Endgame sequel grossed $760 million. With money like that, and with or without Taika Waititi, it will not be a surprise to get Thor 5.
The director is quite busy. Currently, he is promoting Next Goal Wins, which kicks off in theaters on November 17, with Michael Fassbender in the leading role. He told Business Insider that his next film will be the Klara and the Sun adaptation by Kazuo Ishiguro. He is progressing on his take on Alejandro Jodorowsky’s graphic novel The Incal. Then there is his Star Wars movie that is “marinating,” as he writes.
Nothing is officially slated for Thor 5 or the next time we see the character in something else after the last Taika Waititi installment. Most likely, he will return for one or both of the Avengers movies to conclude the Multiverse Saga. As Marvel has proven with its surprise cameos, he could appear anywhere, anytime.
