If you’ve been on the internet long, you know there are some good (and really, really bad) designs for human versions of Pokemon out there. Some are infamous for being detailed, covering lots of Pokemon, or just being plain cute. For a while, these Pokemon human crossover designs were all the rage. (Around the 2000s, to be exact.) The hype surrounding the idea seems to be reviving because Reddit and a few of their users have popped up with some fresh new designs and takes on two of the best starters in the series: Cyndaquil and Tododile.
I might be a little biased, but anyone who played Crystal, HeartGold, or SoulSilver would definitely agree with me. Pokemon is the perfect fandom to be involved with if you’re an artist, purely because of all the colorful cartoony creatures you can draw. With more than a thousand Pokemon in the roster, though, it’s pretty slim to say that one day someone will make a human version of every mon out there. It’s been done before, but that was back when there were only 400 or 600, not the massive numbers we got today.
What Do The Pokemon Starter Human Designs Look Like?
With Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet just fresh out of release, it’s no wonder we’re getting good fanart like this. Cyndaquil is a great design opportunity if artists want to turn it into a human. The artist chose to stay close to the design, making the character not short but instead squatting. The eyes match, and the artist left it up to the clothes and headgear to portray the rest.
For Waniko the Tododile, there are a ton of parallels one can draw from the original to the human reconstruction. First, most may notice that the pose is the same. Second, even the coloration from the top of the head to the tip of the figurative tail matches. Fans of these kinds of designs may start stirring inspiration for other Pokemon art. Would you want a Pokemon anime with these human starter designs?
