Taylor Swift‘s latest interview with TIME magazine has reopened old wounds relating to her spat with Kim Kardashian and Kanye West over a leaked phone call. The year was 2016, just seven years after Kanye West famously interrupted Taylor’s acceptance speech at the VMAs. What should have been an attempt to make peace with Taylor took a dark turn after the Cruel Summer crooner expressed annoyance over the use of her name and Kanye’s reference to her as a “bitch” in his song Famous.
At the time, Kim came to her then-husband’s defense, claiming they sought Taylor’s permission before using her name in the vulgar line, “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex // Why? I made that bitch famous.” She also released excerpts from a phone conversation with Taylor backing her claims. While Taylor Swift admitted the phone call did happen, she claimed the couple never mentioned their intention to liken her to a “bitch” in the song. A longer version of the phone call soon surfaced, validating the crooner’s assertions. After several back and forth between the trio, the ruckus soon fizzled out with each party holding on to their refusal to be portrayed as a liar.
Taylor Swift Recalls Leaked Phone Call Scandal
With another seven years between the Taylor-Kanye feud, the feathers are ruffling once again. In her latest interview with TIME magazine, Taylor Swift, crowned the publication’s Person of the Year 2023 cast back at the controversial incident. The singer described the moment as her “career death.” She recalled how Kim portraying her as a liar sent her to a low point, especially with the world tagging her as a “snake.” Thankfully, the Look What You Made Me Do crooner made a comeback with her 2017 album, Reputation.
Taylor Swift’s heartfelt recollection of the leaked phone call and its repercussions has revived the initial outrage, this time, directed at Kim Kardashian and Kanye West. Speaking to TMZ, an insider confirmed the former couple never apologized to the 33-year-old through the years. Per the source, even after the incident resurfaced following the TIME interview, Kim did not attempt to reach out to Taylor with an apology.
Taylor Open to A Public Apology
The insider also reiterated that Taylor Swift was indeed anticipating an apology from Kim. However, she was only willing to accept the said apology if Kim apologized publicly. The reasoning behind this is simple. Since Kim did the shaming publicly all those years ago almost taking Taylor’s career from her, it was only fair she ameliorated the situation with a public apology.
Although Taylor has yet to voice her stance on an apology in person, her perceived interest in receiving one says a lot. And with an unending heard of Swifties on her tail, Kim barely has a chance of slithering her way out of this one.
