Taylor Swift’s new movie, the Eras Tour concert film, has made a big splash at the box office. Even though it didn’t hit the expected $100 million in its first weekend in the U.S., it still set some big records. It’s now the highest-earning concert movie ever in North America. Amidst the wait for 1989 Taylor’s Version and the Travis Kelce, a lot is happening in Swift’s life.
Taylor Swift’s ‘Eras Tour’ Shines at the Box Office
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour movie had a strong opening, earning between $95 million to $97 million in the U.S. from 3,850 theaters. This success is thanks to her many fans. AMC Theatres, which showed the movie, did something different. Instead of telling everyone how much the movie made on Sunday, like most movie studios do, it waited until Monday.
The movie also did well in other countries. It earned between $31 million and $33 million in 94 countries. This means the movie made a total of $126 million to $130 million worldwide in its first weekend. This is a big deal because it’s the most money a concert film has ever made in its opening weekend. It did better than Michael Jackson’s This Is It, which made $74.3 million.
In the U.S., Swift’s movie might have had the biggest opening in October ever. It could even beat the movie Joker, which made $96.2 million. It’s also one of the top movies of 2023 so far. Swift and her team did something new with this movie. Instead of working with a big Hollywood studio, they worked with AMC Theatres, the largest movie theater company in the world. AMC then let other theaters show the movie too.
Before the movie came out, people thought it might make $100 million to $125 million in the U.S. in its first weekend. Some think it didn’t make $100 million because not many people bought tickets at the last minute.
The movie is loved by both people who watched it and movie critics. It got a perfect score from moviegoers and a 100% positive rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. However, only 25 critics reviewed it, which is less than usual.
Fans Show Their Support
Most of the people who watched the movie were women, making up 82% of the audience. Many of them were between 18 and 34 years old. Teenagers also came to watch in big numbers.
AMC’s top executive said they were thankful to Taylor Swift. He said fans dressed up and danced while watching the movie, showing how much they enjoyed it. Before this, the concert movie Justin Bieber: Never Say Never held the record in the U.S. with $73 million. Michael Jackson’s This Is It made $72.1 million in the U.S. and $181.9 million worldwide.
Other movies also did well. The Exorcist: Believer made $11 million in its second week. Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie passed the $100 million mark worldwide. Saw X and The Creator also made good money. At smaller theaters, a movie called Anatomy of a Fall did the best. It made more money per theater than Taylor Swift’s movie. This movie won a big award at the Cannes Film Festival.
