The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are reportedly returning to the big screen in the form of a live-action movie adaptation of The Last Ronin comic by Kevin Eastman, Peter Laird, and Tom Waltz. The movie is being created by Paramount, and will be R-rated, which should be very good news for anyone who is versed with the source material.
The report from Hollywood Reporter states that Paramount is currently in the early phases of the live-action movie based on The Last Ronin. The movie will be produced by Walter Hamada, who used to be the head of DC films and will be written by Tyler Burton Smith.
TMNT The Last Ronin Live-Action Movie in Development
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles The Last Ronin tells a far more serious story of how the turtles finally met their match. After a fight with the Foot Clan, their Master Splinter meets his demise, soon after which, three of the four turtles die in battle as well. The last survivor, whose identity is a mystery until the end of the first issue of the comic, carries the legacy of the whole group, becoming the most powerful and deadly Ninja Turtle until now.
The loss of his family results in his mutation increasing his size, the Ronin carries the weapons of all four turtles, and his final purpose before death is to get revenge for the death of his family. The series is a very dark take on the otherwise light-hearted Ninja Turtles and definitely needs the R-rating to be portrayed authentically.
Considering the popularity and acclaim of The Last Ronin comic, it’s no surprise that it is getting a live-action movie. Fans have more to look forward to, as we already got confirmation of a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles The Last Ronin game being worked on by Black Forest Games and THQ Nordic. We don’t have many details on the game, but we know it will be a God of War-style narrative-driven game.
If the vision of the original comic is retained in the movie, it might be a fitting end to the story of the Ninja Turtles.
