A Halloween party in Texas erupted into chaos after teenagers wearing Ku Klux Klan-style robes gatecrashed the event and allegedly shouted racial slurs. Critics have thus condemned the display as racist intimidation, while others argue that the First Amendment protects offensive expression.

Photos and videos circulating on social media appear to show around six people wearing the white, pointed robes associated with the KKK at a gathering in El Paso. The group was also reportedly filmed walking through a neighborhood street while shouting racial slurs, according to local social media page FitFam El Paso.

In the video, the teenagers can be heard shouting “We hate n[expletive],” using a common racial slur against Black people, along with other chants such as “One, two, three, by n[expletive].” The incident has drawn condemnation from U.S. Rep. Veronica Escobar, a Democrat representing El Paso, who called the reports deeply disturbing and unacceptable.

“The KKK represents a shameful history of white supremacy, racial terror, and violence against Black Americans and other communities of color,” Escobar said in a statement. “Treating that history as a costume is not a joke.” She added that no one should fear being targeted because of their race or appearance, emphasizing that racism has no place in the community.

The controversy comes amid a separate reported Halloween attack in Woodsboro, Texas, where a Black teenager was allegedly shocked with a stun gun by other teens wearing costumes resembling KKK robes. Attorney Matt Manning said his client was not seriously injured, but as many as six juveniles may have been targeted. The other alleged victims were reportedly chased or terrorized. “For you to dress up as a Klansman, you have a specific intent of terrorizing,” Manning said, rejecting suggestions that the incident amounted to ordinary teenage mischief.

No Arrests for Racism?

Authorities had made no immediate arrests or filed criminal charges in the Woodsboro case, while local police, sheriff’s deputies and Texas Rangers continued investigating. It remains unclear whether the El Paso gathering and the Woodsboro attack are connected. Online reactions to the El Paso footage were overwhelmingly critical, with some residents expressing embarrassment and concern about the message the costumes conveyed.

“Wearing clan outfits for Halloween isn’t edgy or funny,” one commenter wrote, describing the display as a reminder of a history of racism and terror. Another added, “Everything isn’t funny kids, lots pain and suffering come with those images.” However, some commenters raised constitutional arguments. One Facebook user wrote: “Not agreeing what they did was funny or right but the 1st amendment protects all this.”

The First Amendment generally protects offensive expression, but it does not provide blanket immunity for conduct involving threats, violence, or other independently unlawful acts. Whether particular actions cross those legal boundaries depends on the circumstances. For some, the controversy goes beyond Halloween costumes, raising debates about racial intimidation, historical awareness, and the consequences of treating symbols associated with white supremacy as a joke.
