Tennessee House Speaker Cameron Sexton has stripped all Democratic lawmakers of their committee assignments following intense protests over newly redrawn redistricting maps. The sweeping order removes every member of the House Democratic Caucus from their legislative roles effective immediately. The move impacts representation across the state, affecting nearly two million Tennessee residents who now lack Democratic representation on key legislative committees.
According to official letters, Sexton cited disruptions during a recent special session as the primary reason for the sudden committee removals. Representative Justin Jones characterized the action as “racial retaliation” against Black voters and their chosen elected representatives following the recent redistricting protest. Jones argued that these removals represent a consistent pattern of authoritarian abuse following the public protests against the redrawn voting maps.
Sexton accused the Democratic lawmakers of creating disorder on the House floor by using prohibited props and noisemakers during the session. Minority Leader Karen Camper described the recent move as one of the most troubling abuses of power by the state Republican supermajority. Camper stated that Democrats would continue fighting for voting rights and democracy despite the loss of their formal House committee assignments.
Tennessee Residents CritThe Sudden Committee Removals
One Reddit user compared the legislative action to historical segregation, writing, “The GOP is putting Jim Crow back in place.” Another commenter warned that leadership is “forcing black people to the back of the bus again” after the legislative vote.
A participant on the thread claimed the state Republican party is “a special kind of nasty” for removing committee assignments. Different users argued that leaders are using authoritarian tactics to “steal from taxpayers” by removing every single member of the opposition.
One vocal user expressed disdain, writing, “I don’t think I’ve ever hated something as much as Tennessee Republicans hate America.” A different participant characterized the sudden removal of power as “what a coup looks like” while criticizing the House leadership team.
Critics online predicted Republican defenses, noting that leadership will likely “claim this is actually the Dems’ fault” moving forward. One user who identified as a relative of veterans said after reading the news that this “blatant racist oppression” felt suffocating and hopeless.
The removal of every Democrat from committees leaves millions of residents without direct legislative influence as the special session continues.
