A frightening incident in New York was caught on video after a woman managed to slam her front door shut just moments before a stranger tried to enter her home.

Some New York police incidents have highlighted the danger of suspects following people to their homes before attempting a robbery or trying to gain entry. In response, the NYPD encourages residents to stay aware of their surroundings, avoid opening the door to strangers, and call 911 immediately if they believe someone has followed them home or is acting suspiciously near their residence. Incidents in which suspects allegedly trailed victims to their front doors have reinforced the importance of taking these precautions.

In the shocking Ring camera footage, the woman opened her apartment’s front door and began walking inside. Just as she closed the door behind her, a man suddenly rushed toward the entrance and reached out in an apparent attempt to stop the door from shutting. Fortunately, she managed to close it before he could get inside.

The man remained outside the apartment door for several moments, looking at it before checking something on his phone. After a short time, he walked away. Many viewers said the incident could have ended much worse, noting that the woman’s child was waiting just inside the apartment when she came home. They pointed out that the child could have easily distracted her, potentially delaying her from closing the door quickly enough to keep the man from getting inside.

The incident also prompted renewed discussion about a safety concern that law enforcement has warned about in some cases. This is how people with criminal intent allegedly follow someone home before attempting to approach them at their residence. In some reported incidents, suspects have waited until a person unlocked or opened their front door before trying to force their way inside. Because of this risk, safety experts and police recommend staying aware of your surroundings when arriving home. In addition, avoid distractions when entering your residence, and contact authorities if you believe someone may have followed you, rather than assuming it is a coincidence.

Viewers Shocked After New York Man Tries to Follow Woman

The video sparked reactions online. Many viewers were shocked by what happened to the New York woman and called for the man to be identified and arrested. “Find him, arrest him, deport him after he does his time in prison,” one person wrote. Others focused on sharing safety advice. “Don’t hold your building door for anyone. I don’t care how rude it looks. Never,” another commenter wrote.

Several women also shared how the video reinforced the precautions they take to protect themselves. “I’m always aware of my surroundings. I don’t live in an apartment building. I know my neighbors & they know me. I know vehicles, I watch, I’m not obsessive but always aware. Most important, if something or someone doesn’t look right I trust my judgement. I never open a door if someone rings the bell without looking first. Ring cameras are next, I rent so I have to be sure I can install,” one woman wrote.

The video sparked a conversation about the safety concerns many women face when returning home, particularly when they are alone. It also led to broader discussions about the importance of staying aware of your surroundings. Along with recognizing suspicious behavior and taking precautions if you believe someone may be following you.
