The Gym Class Heroes’ October 17th concert at the State Fair in Dallas, Texas, was cut short after Travie McCoy made some impeachment-related remarks against President Trump. Reports say it was actually because of the “cussing,” while others strongly believe it was the anti-Trump statements that the singer made. However, in a post on r/Music that thousands of users tuned into, the conversation shifted to mocking Texans in general for not being able to take the impeachment comment.
“Texans get easily offended,” laughed a commenter, with over four thousand people upvoting in agreement. Another chimed in, calling the state residents “snowflakes,” with plenty of others joking about how oversensitive Texans can be. Among the replies, someone claiming to be from Lone Star State argued that not everyone are “ignorant folks,” saying that there are plenty of progressive people in Texas.
Still, the majority of comments were full of people calling out Texas for not letting McCoy have his “free speech” at the fair concert. Gym Class Heroes isn’t considered strongly affiliated with politics, and Travie McCoy hasn’t really been connected to any strong political stance. But with this recent move at the Dallas Fair, it’s clear he’s anti-Trump and isn’t afraid to speak his mind. Many blame the organizers for being too upset about calling for the President’s impeachment, as many who were attending the concert reportedly didn’t seem to care.
Concert Attendees Blame the State Fair Organizers for the Drama
“Rather than give up, he continued performing the song without a microphone — rapping the verses himself while the crowd sang the chorus,” recalled a user in r/Dallas, who posted their recollection under the title, “Well I guess the State Fair didn’t know what type of artist Travie McCoy was.” Another who claims to have attended added with agreement: “I thought the set was really good, everyone on the floor seemed to be having a great time.” According to these commenters and others, attendees were fine, but the State Fair managers weren’t happy about any anti-Trump sentiment.
Some people even report being mistreated by staff, saying that guards were unkind to the concertgoers, while the schedule was suddenly changed, messing with plenty of people’s plans. That said, there are easily offended people in Texas, like in any state, but the ones offended were allegely running the show, not singing with Gym Class Heroes in the stands.
To conclude, the mockery of Texans was overgeneralized, as even people claiming to be Texans themselves have been openly against the current administration and not ashamed about it. “The entire problem with Texans,” complained a Texan Redditor. “We have a bunch of uneducated republicans everywhere who don’t know how to read statistics of what they are actually voting for and will repeat nonsense voting and rhetoric online and at their churches.”
Many Texas people feel like they were put in an unfair light because of what happened at the State Fair concert, with random online users mocking Texans, with actual alleged Texans arguing to be of the same mind as McCoy. But as with any online political debate, it can be hard to sway a forum’s audience once they agree on what to be upset about.
