82-year-old Canadian singer Joni Mitchell is an American citizen after a journey she claims started over six decades ago. She celebrated her naturalization on Instagram, where she posted a smiling photo of herself holding a US flag. While many comments on her post expressed excitement about the development, hundreds on Reddit debated what exactly is going on with this immigration and its timing.
“People are ripping her for this but a 62-year journey to citizenship really shows how broken the immigration process is,” pointed out a Redditor on r/Music. Of course, Mitchell never explicitly stated that her application took 62 years, nor did she express any issues with navigating the immigration process. Her post’s quote was presumably speaking about her life in America as someone born in Canada.
Needless to say, a response to the Redditor’s argument expressed this point exactly, adding that Mitchell has had permanent residency for years but hasn’t adjusted her status until now. “That process, which I’ve been through, doesn’t take that long,” they concluded, referring to her naturalization and the 62 years mentioned.
Redditors Debated About the Timing of Joni Mitchell’s Citizenship, With Midterm Voting Around the Corner
On the other hand, many Redditors in r/indieheads argued that the timing of Joni Mitchell’s citizenship was the bigger issue. “Her timing needs a bit of work,” remarked a commenter, and over 700 people agreed with upvotes. “Maybe she really wants to vote,” questioned another. Some hinted that there’s a theory that she’s MAGA, with the choice to become an American now.
However, plenty of users were quick to shut down the rumor that she’s a Trump supporter. “She’s very anti-MAGA, btw. I know the timing might be a bit off, but worth mentioning this bit,” shared a commenter. Some might recall how, as reported by Billboard Canada, Mitchell has been vocal in the past of her thoughts on Trump. She cussed him publicly, calling him someone who would “lie, cheat, skim, [and] scam” people.
“Everybody get out and vote. This is an important one. I wish I could vote – I’m Canadian. I’m one of those lousy immigrants,” remarked Joni Mitchell back in 2024. Now, however, with the voting for midterm elections around the corner, she’ll legally be eligible to fulfill her wish. While her latest Instagram post doesn’t contain any anti-Trump sentiment, her past remarks might be a clue as to what her political stance is.
So now the question is whether she’ll go through with her wish from years ago and show her supporters she’ll put her money where her mouth is. Time will tell, but one Redditor joked about what President Trump might think: “Boney Joni Mitchell will always be an immigrant as far as I am concerned.”
