Mr. ‘Alright Alright Alright’ has been called out as ‘all wrong,’ with San Antonio Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones in Texas openly denouncing Matthew McConaughey’s message to Independent voters. Several days ago, the Interstellar star took to Instagram to make a political statement, saying that Independent votes matter. The major focus is generally Republican vs. Democrat, but McConaughey is urging people to take the other options more seriously.
Democrat Mayor Jones called out the actor as though he really were unironically “Dazed and Confused,” saying that his video was a “complete waste of time.” In an Instagram post of her own, the former Under Secretary of the Air Force wrote “TLDW version: Al-wrong, Al-wrong, Al-wrong,” mocking his iconic catchphrase. She continued, adding a long list of reasons why she’s confident McConaughey’s message is wrong and potentially harmful.
“We finally have the opportunity to vote out those who have enabled everything from the Uvalde massacre,” Jones said, also alleging that Texas has the “highest rate of uninsured adults and kids in the country.” She spoke of the host of other major problems that won’t be solved with voting Independent, adding that “voter suppression laws is the embodiment of reckless privilege.” The San Antonio mayor concluded with urging people to vote Democrat.
McConaughey Was Slammed on Social Media Over His Independent Voting Post
Many commenters, including in McConaughey’s own post, spoke out against the Dallas Buyers Club actor, with many feeling he needed to be ‘put in his place.’ “This isn’t the time my guy,” wrote one Instagram user, with another calling the actor “irresponsible.” “We’ve had enough of white men trying to tell US what do,” exclaimed a third user.
Reddit users chimed in the conversation, adding that it’s not McConaughey’s political message that’s necessarily bad; it’s the discernment with his timing, or the alleged lack thereof. “It’s not that he’s speaking out with a political opinion,” explains a Redditor. “Everyone has that right. It’s that he waited UNTIL THE LAST F-ING SECOND to issue a mealy-mouthed “both sides” whine after years of tossing around a gubernatorial run.”
Ultimately, Matthew McConaughey’s call for people to vote Independent might not have been well-received as he might have liked. While the messaging isn’t inherently bad, many accuse the actor of urging Americans to ‘throw their votes away.’ And at a time when so much hinges on which politician is in power, every vote matters.
