Not even a week after releasing her highly anticipated album, Cowboy Carter, Beyoncé released a surprise remix of one of her lead singles called “Texas Hold ‘Em (Pony Up) Remix.” The remix quietly arrived on streaming platforms on Thursday, April 4, then Beyoncé announced the new track via her website and Instagram story. This marks the first remix of the singer’s latest full-length release, with the potential for more remixes to come in the future.

Beyoncé is no stranger to releasing remixes of her hit songs, and given the artist noted that she recorded around 100 songs for Cowboy Carter, it’s unsurprising she has a few extra verses to spare for remixes. “Texas Hold ‘Em (Pony Up) Remix” includes a beat breakdown and a new verse sung by Bey. Within hours of its release, the song rose to number one on iTunes, surpassing the original version on the chart, as well as other songs from Cowboy Carter, including “II Most Wanted” and Beyoncé’s cover of Dolly Parton’s classic “Jolene.”

Cowboy Carter is Beyoncé’s eighth studio album and the second of three albums in a trilogy she announced during the COVID-19 pandemic, the first of which was Renaissance (2022). Although Bey herself said the album is a Beyoncé album, not a country album, the record is categorized as country, and it features famed country artists Parton, Willie Nelson, and Linda Martell on various tracks as DJs of a fictitious radio station.

The Beyoncé album was met with critical acclaim, scoring 91/100 on Metacritic, tying the score she received for Renaissance. Cowboy Carter is expected to debut at number one on the Billboard 200, which would mark her sixth number-one album. The original version of “Texas Hold ‘Em” hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the singer’s ninth career number-one track.
