The world is already an unjust place to live in, but the government often makes things even harder. In one Texas immigrant mother’s case, the American justice system ruined her life. Carmen Mejia had spent over 20 years of her life in prison for the death of her infant child and the related convictions of the crime. However, “newly discovered evidence establishes that she is actually innocent of all three counts,” NBC News reports; as a result, she was exonerated. But instead of being released, ICE has detained her and now threatens her with possible deportation.
As context for Mejia’s story, she had asked her oldest daughter to start a bath for her 10-month-old baby. Due to some heating issues with the house, the water became extremely hot, causing the poor child to die after being exposed to the heat. Meija was convicted of “felony murder, injury to a child, and injury to a child by omission,” then sentenced to life in prison. Though she has finally been found innocent, now ICE threatens to ruin her life again.
Plenty of online users are rightfully upset by how horrible the justice system has treated this Texas immigrant mother. “There is no justice in the world,” remarked a Redditor. “This woman’s entire life has been stolen from her, and unfortunately for her, 22 years of unjust incarceration ended during an administration hell bent on further ruining lives.” “A true horror story. If anyone deserves an honest assessment of immigration status, it’s her,” added a commenter.
It should be noted that Carmen Mejia did not have any criminal record before being convicted, according to the Innocence Project. And to quell any doubts about her documentation: Mejia came from Honduras in 1995 and had lawful work authorization to be employed in the US. Not only was she wrongfully imprisoned for a crime that she didn’t commit, but now she’s also being wrongfully detained by ICE despite being in the States completely legally.
