A Texas high school math teacher is at the center of an online firestorm after sharing a TikTok about discussing her wife with students. The video quickly spread, with many users calling on school officials to take disciplinary action against the educator.
The video was originally posted by Texas teacher and coach Abigale Freeman on her personal TikTok account. It later gained wider attention after being reposted by Libs of TikTok on X, where it sparked debate before spreading across multiple Reddit communities.
In the original video, Freeman explained that the conversation came up during the final days of the school year. “When we were done with our test review, we were just talking in class and it came up that I had a wife,” she said. According to Freeman, some students immediately lost interest, while others became curious. “I had kids immediately lay their head down, they don’t care about my life and that’s fine. Then I had a few kids who ran to my desk and demanded to see pictures of my wife.”
Freeman went on to describe how meaningful the moment was for her, particularly as a lesbian teacher working in Texas. She said one student even told her she was a role model because she was the first person in her life to show that being queer could be “happy, healthy, and normalized.”
What began as a heartfelt storytime quickly became a political flashpoint after the clip gained traction on X. The controversy eventually caught the attention of Texas State Board of Education member Brandon Hall, who told The Dallas Express, “This teacher crossed the line between education and indoctrination. She should be fired and lose her certification.”
The Internet Weighs In
Many users on X appeared to agree with Hall’s assessment. One commenter wrote, “Teachers pushing their personal sex lives on students under the guise of ‘normalizing’ it has no place in the classroom. This isn’t education, it’s grooming.” Another added, “THAT right there has NO PLACE in schools nor polite society. She needs to be fired and lose her teaching credentials.”
As the discussion continued, many of the replies became increasingly hostile toward LGBTQ+ people. Reddit users, however, largely viewed the controversy differently. Some argued that the backlash was exactly what they would expect from Texas. One commenter wrote, “Texas is a toilet that thinks it’s a palace.”
Others questioned what made Freeman’s comments inappropriate in the first place. “If a straight person can talk about it (their partner), then a gay/lesbian or any part of the LGBTQ+ can as well. No double standards,” one Reddit user argued. Another dismissed the controversy entirely, writing, “People really out there spending all their energy worrying about things that don’t affect them. Must be nice to have no real problems in your life.”
The controversy arrives at a time when LGBTQ+ issues remain a political flashpoint in Texas, with teachers increasingly finding their personal lives and social media activity placed under public scrutiny.
