The Alters are back

One of the best games of last year, and one we featured on our GOTY list, was The Alters, and with good reason. Beyond offering a fresh take on the survival genre, it was one of the most introspective and narrative-driven titles of recent years that really made you ponder, “What could have happened if I had done things differently?” And of course, we saw that through the eyes of Jan, Jan, and many more Jans. However, it seems the story isn’t over, because 11 bit Studios just announced a huge 20-hour DLC for The Alters called Last Variable, and its release date is just right around the corner.

The Alters: Last Variable Launches on July 13

During the Future Games Show presentation, 11 bit Studios surprised us all with the announcement of The Alters: Last Variable, a 20-hour DLC focusing on Jan Scientist, who decided to stay behind to work on his research, and is now looking for ways to unveil what’s happening with the Oasis.

To do so, of course, players will need to call for some help, mainly new versions of Jan. This time, we’ll get some more like-minded Alters that will certainly work better alongside Scientist Jan. Some of the ones you’ll be able to call are the Geologist, Biologist, Chemist, and Physicist.

Beyond that, there will be new mechanics in place, such as the ability to terraform parts of the map, giving way for new resources and other things that will alter (no pun intended) the planet. Also, there is a new module called the Cryosleep Chamber, which will give you more time on the planet, while also letting you observe your long-term changes as you keep working on the Oasis.

Of course, there are many more things to do and build, such as a module that lets you give more assignments to your Alters, likely making some of the managing tasks a bit easier for you and your crew.

And now, for those already eager to try out The Alters: Last Variable, the DLC will launch on July 13, which is almost a month away. Also, it will be a simultaneous launch on consoles and PC, meaning that every fan of Jan Dolski will be able to jump into it pretty soon.
